Robotic Surgery
Urology Specialists, P.C. is one of only a few practices in the region that utilizes
the da VinciTM Surgical System from Intuitive
Surgical, Inc.® to perform minimally invasive surgery, resulting in less blood loss, less
pain, and a more rapid postoperative recovery.
System OverviewAs the only commercially available telerobotic system in the world, the
da VinciTM Surgical System consists of 3 main
components:
- vision cart holding a dual light source and dual 3-chip cameras
- movable surgical cart containing 2 or 3 mounted arms and a camera arm
- master console generating a magnified 3-dimensional image, foot pedals to control
the camera and instruments, and master control grips that drive the robotic arms at the patient's side.
The surgery is
greatly facilitated as the surgeon's hand-eye axis is positioned to give the illusion of directly
operating on the patient through an open incision while he or she is seated comfortably at the
console.

The articulating laparoscopic instruments
(EndoWrist®) have complex cable driven joints at the tips allowing the same motions possible by the
human hand during open surgery. This allows for increased precision in dissection and suturing during the
operation.
AdvantagesThe da VinciTM Surgical System
offers many advantages over conventional laparoscopic and open surgery including:
- improved 3-dimensional viewing with 6-12X magnification
- increased dexterity with instruments having the same range of motion as the human hand
- elimination of physiologic tremor
- motion scaling available, increasing the precision possible for surgical dissection
- ergonomic console decreases surgeon fatigue and allows for completion of more complex
and time consuming procedures without potentially adversely affecting the surgery.
This surgical platform allows Urology Specialists, P.C. to offer a minimally invasive alternative
to open surgery for the following urologic procedures:
- Prostatectomy (removal of prostate)

- Pyeloplasty (plastic surgery on the kidney)

- Cystectomy (removal of the bladder)
- Ureteroureterostomy (resection and reattachment of the ureter)
- Partial Nephrectomy (removing part of the diseased kidney)
